That's a great idea, Rob, but would it be good to collate it all at some time, so that it becomes an easy reference list? Not volounteering here or anything pale

That was my original suggestion but when I write things down the wrong message comes across, my fault sorry Rob Embarassed

How about Rob and I create a glossary and if anyone thinks of anything to add we can edit it in? If that is ok with you Rob?

Den.

I am being really anal and pedantic here, but is that the way they spell sceptic in Ireland? I just wondered because obviously it is an American spelling.

Hi Jamie,

its a funny old debate, in fact the 'UK Skeptic' spells it with a K, which I disagree with.

Some people say it means nothing other than spelling format, others debate the origins and meanings.

The American spelling, akin to Greek, preferred by Fowler, and used by many Canadians, is the earlier form.[111] Sceptic also pre-dates the settlement of the US and follows the French sceptique and Latin scepticus. In the mid-18th century Dr Johnson's dictionary listed skeptic without comment or alternative but this form has never been popular in the UK;[112] sceptic, an equal variant in Webster's Third (1961), has now become "chiefly British". Australians generally follow British usage. All are pronounced with a hard "c" though in French the letter is silent and is pronounced like septique.

Regards,

Den.

Ah, my bad... We, in Ireland spell the same as you do in the UK. However, my compu is set to American spelling. My personal spelling is atrocious, as I'm highly dyslexic. So that's why I spell it with a "K" even though I know it's wrong. Embarassed

As im sure I have said before,

As a Brit site I prefer people to use Sceptic rather than Skeptic, however I do not want to get hung up too much on spelling. Im a good speller but typing on here I make loads of errors, two finger typist in a rush.

We all have better things to do than debate spelling and I know Jamie was not having a go, I mentioned this point to Rob early in the formulation of the forum.

Its a niggle but not a problem, certainly nothing to worry abot and if you check theres loads of UK forums saying UK Skeptics etc.

I do not understand that, maybe they are not educated in the different spellings, maybe they get more hits on the internet search engines!

All I know is we are a Brit site and Sceptic is staying and not capitualting to American spelling just toconform to their ways.

Saying that I have no problem with how people spell on here, as long as what is written is ledgible? concise and relevant (I know I have strayed) then there is no problem.

So Rob, just keep using the spellchecker as is mate, Jamie I know you meant no harm and im sure Rob is not sensitive but check my latest blog, weird coincidence or what Laughing

Regards,

Den.

Oh I like that one. I could easily be a septic sceptic Evil or Very Mad I also like the way septique is not a million miles away from mystique - yeah that'll scare 'em Twisted Evil

Sorry Rob. I wasn't being an arsehole. I have done that a few times when I send email. I googled the problem and apparently all microsoft has this fault. You really have to go into the computer to stop doing it as a default when you rely to emails in Outlook (I don't have the problem when I am writing a word document or starting a new email).
