Minds that Shape our Future: A Review of "Grown up Digital"

This a largely positive review of a book that provides a refreshingly optimistic view of the Net Generation. Better still it teaches and promotes understanding, which is very important for me as a coach fascinated with new teaching methods. My review includes reference to Damian Thompson's "Counterknowledge", which I read at the same time and provided a sage contrast when Tapscott preaches the scrutinizing trait of the Net Generation. He neglects to mention the huge amount of misinformation ...

As a Brit abroad on the other side of the pond I thought I would bring to your attention the publication of a new book by a British Psychologist, Bruce M Hood. Called "Supersense" it outlines his theory of why humans believe unbelievable stuff and why we will ALWAYS believe in a lot of this stuff no matter how sceptical we are as a race. It is a fascinating book full of very funny and witty anecdotes. i really enjoyed it and it has had some great reviews. It is already out in the US ...

This has GOT to be one for you, Den. It is all about belief, but tackles the topic from a totally different angle. Although the author is definitely in the modern sceptic camp he is not interested in debunking various systems of belief or putting a case against religion and the New Age movement. Instead his area of study is based on the theory that our brains are hardwired into believing in irrational things. In short the author, Bruce Hood, believes that if you dropped a bunch of young kids ...

I only just heard the "Start of the Week" episode interviewing the author of this new book. After "Counter-Knowledge" by Damian Thompson I was hungry for more books debunking con-theos and, more importantly, looking at the psychology of conspiricists and the viral nature of their spreading. This book really sounds like it fits the bill!

Psychic that 'reads' babies takes on Randi's Million $ challenge. Should be quite entertaining to see how this pans out.

Im not interested in who wins/loses, more which way ch.5 are going to slice and dice to portray this.

As we know the sceptic usually gets the shaft in the media

"In God We Doubt: Confessions of an Angry Agnostic" by John Humphrys is a book that really speaks to my heart. Humphrys unashamedly takes the centre ground in the argument over the existance of god. He went from devout believer to atheist and now fights at what he says - and agree - is the hardest station of them all. Agnostics are often put down as being wishy washy in their thinking or cowardly in not making a stance. Who wants the moniker "Weak" Agnostic for example? Even ...

A philosophers eye view on the evolution of religion and how it has us spellbound by its doctrine, with hypotheses galore and information of how we may break the spell.
Surprisingly lots of good science and no ego. He openly admits to hypothesising and claims no hold on the truth, rather encourages us to go forward and commit to our own research, using his book as a jumping board.

"Most people fully accept paranormal and pseudoscientific claims without critique as they are promoted by the mass media. Here Be Dragons offers a toolbox for recognizing and understanding the dangers of pseudoscience, and appreciation for the reality-based benefits offered by real science."

So far the best and most objective book I have read on the subject of scepticism is "Why People Believe Weird Things". The author, Michael Shermer is the founder of the Skeptic Society and editor of Skeptic magazine (US Sp.)
