Ok guys,

how many of you have watched the latest Bond, Ironman, Hulk etc, whatever youre interested in really?

Now how many sat there applying the sceptic's eye of critical thinking skills to each and every scene?

We know its fake but we love it so much(normally) that we suspend belief.

I was born and bred on wrestling. British then wwf/wwe. I still love it today and regularly see the live shows, its my sacred cow.

Do you think we should be sceptical of everything, ...

When most people think of psychology or psychiatry they think of Sigmund Freud and the various schools of psychoanalysis. A psychoanalysis, at least in the USA, is usually the professional term given to a "shrink". Yet psychoanalysis is not a science. In fact my favourite psychoanalysis, Viktor Frankl, described the close connection between psychoanalysis and philosophy.

Psychoanalysis has been brought into a question a lot and, as a rule, scientific sceptics do not look very ...

Mass Hysteria

Whether it is offered as proof that people have been "touched by the hand of God" or "possessed by an evil spirit/devil/demon etc." the psychological phenomon known as mass hysteria has helped fuel superstitious fear and feed the bank of accounts of cult leaders for many years.

The salem witch trials were a prime example of how mass hysteria can quickly spread and wreck the lives of hundreds as paranoia grows with it:

What makes you a sceptic?

Thanks to Jamie for suggesting this board,

now,

what makes you a sceptic?

For me I was inspired by Richard Dawkins to fight the tide of pseudoscience and promote real science, owever it was the mentalist Derren Brown that sparked my initial interest.

After reading his excellent book I looked at his recommended reading list and found Dawkins and others, and haven't looked back.

What about you guys?
