This type of thing does make my blood boil. It was sent to me by a relative. Unfortunately many of my relatives do read The Sun newspaper, second only to The Mirror, in tabloid infamy in my mind.

Anyway, for a paper that so often takes the moral high ground in matters relating to child abuse I find it astounding how one of their reporters could not at least apply a little critical thinking in reporting this case: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2689523/Koran-boys-skin-mystery.html

If we were doing our own glossary of words and phrases in scepticism there would have to be an entry for this one. I have to admit that despite my love of writing, reading and English literature in general, the word bypassed me until I heard in the famous "League of Gentlemen" scene. Put "egregious" and "league of gentlemen" into a YouTube search and it's bound to be there - very funny!

Since then, however, I have noticed that sceptics wield the term on a regular ...

During my admittedly short (less than one year) jaunt as a sceptic I have become increasingly sceptical of the so called Skeptics. I can not totally blame the followers, of which I was once one myself, but they do seem to blanket anything and everything as fake and bogus if an 'authority' figure, usually a higher profile skeptic, says it is so.

Examples are calling 'psychics' liars, even though they have never met and know nothing about that person other than 'media bites', or blanketing ...

Geoff Thompson has a theory regarding laws of attraction. He says that we should always be aware of our circle of influence i.e. millionaires hang out with millionaires. My concern is that somehow I have attracted conspiricists. By publically showing my general sceptical approach and love of history, I have somehow given off the wrong signal. Another case for serious inquiry to help this person understand whats going on, not the irrationality of running to churches for 'exorcisms' of allthings.

Again lack of education in this field plus lots of 'common knowledge' add fuel to the 'ghost' fires,

Perhaps I am making up my own definitions here, but it strikes me that people who are stupid are not necessarily of low intelligence. Clever and bright people do stupid things. I am sure that geniuses have done things their peers would consider stupid. We know that very well educated and intelligent people can cling to very unreasonable, illogical and irrational beliefs. Their's the rub: belief!

Michael Shermer did a fabulous job in covering this topic in his book "Why People Believe ...

'Military activity'

He said that if the turbine blade was still, it would take the equivalent of a 10-tonne load to do that kind of damage, but if it was rotating, or hit by a moving object, the force could be a lot less.

He said of the possible cause: "It's definitely not a bird. It could be ice thrown from a neighbouring turbine that struck it.

For my club's fifth tenet I chose "Open Mind". However, as a sceptic, I am routinely accused of not having an open mind. My view is that the true sceptic has an open mind. In fact, I think history has shown us that some of the greatest sceptics were very imaginative and creative. It was the extent of their questioning nature and their insistance on not accepting absolutes that defines being open minded.

I think this has the makings of an article. Would British Sceptic be interested ...

If there is a soul... why is it effected by dementia and other neurological problems?
Surely that proves that the soul does not exist. As we grow older our brains start to loose their function, this totally proves that conscious thought is linked to the workings of the brain (IE - electrical impulses, etc) and that conscious thought is no some proof that the soul exists as some intangible and esoteric concept.

Just my take anyway.

After all both support the concept of common sense, which I define as a combination of intuition and obvious data, and consider myself to be a sceptic, which I define as a critical and rational thinker. This is not to say that I haven't got loads of other apparent paradoxes in my personality, but rather that I see my form of scepticism as being commonsensical and my scepticism as being ...

Gavin De Becker's shockingly accurate PINS have often revealed to me the methods of manipulators and I have been quick to point them out and act accordingly.

However, in the world of scepticism I am starting to notice the behaviours of troofers, believers etc. Recently Den and ...

Okay, this is a subject that often lurks at the back of my mind. I think pseudoscepticism is very close to being just plain cynical or, alternatively, it could be cynicism masquerading as scepticism. As sceptics, we often get frustrated with those who have the heaviest burden of proof on their subject arguing for a balanced view against something that has already done an overwhelming job of providing proof. We get annoyed when we are told that Darwinism is a religion or that science is a religion. ...

Back when they discovered "double exposures" in the early days of photography. All the ghosts appeared to be translucent humans, as you'd expect with a double exposure. Now days, with the digital technology we don't see ghosts like that any more. Now they are more peculiar amorphous blobs, or wispy lights. Much like the artifacts you'd associate with flashes and a digital medium.

Well, You can't say they don't follow fashion!
