This type of thing does make my blood boil. It was sent to me by a relative. Unfortunately many of my relatives do read The Sun newspaper, second only to The Mirror, in tabloid infamy in my mind.

Anyway, for a paper that so often takes the moral high ground in matters relating to child abuse I find it astounding how one of their reporters could not at least apply a little critical thinking in reporting this case: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2689523/Koran-boys-skin-mystery.html

This a largely positive review of a book that provides a refreshingly optimistic view of the Net Generation. Better still it teaches and promotes understanding, which is very important for me as a coach fascinated with new teaching methods. My review includes reference to Damian Thompson's "Counterknowledge", which I read at the same time and provided a sage contrast when Tapscott preaches the scrutinizing trait of the Net Generation. He neglects to mention the huge amount of misinformation ...

As a Brit abroad on the other side of the pond I thought I would bring to your attention the publication of a new book by a British Psychologist, Bruce M Hood. Called "Supersense" it outlines his theory of why humans believe unbelievable stuff and why we will ALWAYS believe in a lot of this stuff no matter how sceptical we are as a race. It is a fascinating book full of very funny and witty anecdotes. i really enjoyed it and it has had some great reviews. It is already out in the US ...

This has GOT to be one for you, Den. It is all about belief, but tackles the topic from a totally different angle. Although the author is definitely in the modern sceptic camp he is not interested in debunking various systems of belief or putting a case against religion and the New Age movement. Instead his area of study is based on the theory that our brains are hardwired into believing in irrational things. In short the author, Bruce Hood, believes that if you dropped a bunch of young kids ...

The Razor

Ockham’s razor is the principle of parsimony or simplicity according to which the simpler theory is more likely to be true. Ockham did not invent this principle; it is found in Aristotle, Aquinas, and other philosophers Ockham read. Nor did he call the principle a “razor.” In fact, the first known use of the term “Occam’s razor” occurs in 1852 in the work of the British mathematician William Rowan Hamilton. Although Ockham never even makes an argument for the validity of the principle, ...

I only just heard the "Start of the Week" episode interviewing the author of this new book. After "Counter-Knowledge" by Damian Thompson I was hungry for more books debunking con-theos and, more importantly, looking at the psychology of conspiricists and the viral nature of their spreading. This book really sounds like it fits the bill!

During my admittedly short (less than one year) jaunt as a sceptic I have become increasingly sceptical of the so called Skeptics. I can not totally blame the followers, of which I was once one myself, but they do seem to blanket anything and everything as fake and bogus if an 'authority' figure, usually a higher profile skeptic, says it is so.

Examples are calling 'psychics' liars, even though they have never met and know nothing about that person other than 'media bites', or blanketing ...

I received an email this very night from a fellow sceptic that is far more knowledgeable and eloquent than I. However like the best of us he stumbled and I was fortunate enough to be the person he looked to for advice on a prickly subject area.

The word 'Deconstructionism' was mentioned and tied in with Scepticism, a very true but deliciously naughty little puzzle to throw at someone as Deconstructionism is not that widely recognized as associated with the modern ...

My concern is that somehow I have attracted conspiricists. By publically showing my general sceptical approach and love of history, I have somehow given off the wrong signal. THE SKY IS FALLING! THE SKY IS FALLING! Is it just me or are we seeing yet another chicken little 'pure madness' panic sweeping the world yet again, this time the culprit is swine flu.

Reports by the World Health Organization (WHO) that the 'pandemic' can not contained and they have placed swine flu at n 4 out of 6 for danger level. Reading my local gazette on line today (It's certainly not worth paying for) I see the Gazette's resident 'Ghostbuster' is out there spreading unfounded truths and creating credulous beliefs in the gullible yet again.

To Quote: Mr Hallowell said: "Without a doubt, the Customs House is haunted, but it is still a very welcoming place.

How can Mr Hallowell be so certain as to state in a local newspaper he has no doubts that the customs ...

Sceptic completes firewalk

Courage is not the absence of fear, it is the ability to operate in spite of fear!

A few weeks back I had the fortune to happen across an article in my local Gazette discussing a fire-walk charity event in aid of the local St Clare's Hospice.

Now I had heard quite a bit previously about fire walking ceremonies, they have been practiced by many cultures , all with their own slight variations on a theme, for many years now and ...

On Scepticism

Scepticism - To believe that nothing is certain.

As a sceptic this is my motto in life, I walk a fine line between the dogmatists (who claim to have the whole truth) and the Sophists (Who claim there is no truth or that it is beyond our reach).

The dogmatic lifestyle has been hijacked by many of the new age sceptics that merrily post on forums about how something has been scientifically 'proven' and therefore is absolutely correct, as ...

Again lack of education in this field plus lots of 'common knowledge' add fuel to the 'ghost' fires,

A psychoanalysis, at least in the USA, is usually the professional term given to a "shrink". Yet psychoanalysis is not a science. In fact my favourite psychoanalysis, Viktor Frankl, described the close connection between psychoanalysis and philosophy.

I am sure that geniuses have done things their peers would consider stupid. We know that very well educated and intelligent people can cling to very unreasonable, illogical and irrational beliefs. Their's the rub: belief!
